Citadel founder and CEO Ken Griffin has pledged a record $3 billion to Carnegie Mellon University, the largest single-person gift reported in higher education to date. Of that total, $2 billion will fund a brand-new CMU campus in Miami's Wynwood neighborhood, while the remaining $1 billion will support Carnegie Mellon's Pittsburgh operations.
Campus Plans and Timeline
CMU Miami will occupy more than 35 acres in Wynwood. Groundbreaking is scheduled for 2027, and the university expects to welcome its first class in 2028. Once complete, the campus is planned to serve more than 3,500 undergraduate, master's and PhD students, with nearly 300 faculty members and over 600 staff.
Academic Model and Research Focus
Instead of organizing study around traditional majors, CMU Miami will structure programs and research around four broad societal challenge areas: human health and biological discovery; national security and strategic capabilities; energy and climate resilience; and advanced manufacturing and industrial transformation. The campus blueprint also includes space for corporate research labs and venture studios to foster industry partnerships and tech translation.
Support for Pittsburgh Campus
The remaining $1 billion of Griffin's pledge will bolster CMU's Pittsburgh campus. Funds are earmarked for flexible university priorities and include a $500 million investment in the School of Computer Science, which will be renamed the Kenneth C. Griffin School of Computer Science. Griffin will also join Carnegie Mellon's Board of Trustees.
"CMU Miami represents a generational opportunity to build a new center of research and intellectual life — one that will attract exceptional students, scholars, and researchers from across the globe," Griffin said in a statement.
CMU President Farnam Jahanian emphasized the role of artificial intelligence in shaping the new model: "AI represents one of the defining intellectual developments of our time, and it demands that we rethink how we educate students, conduct research and partner with others."
Context and Philanthropic Significance
Bloomberg estimates Griffin's net worth at about $57.5 billion. He moved Citadel's global headquarters to Miami in 2022. The $3 billion commitment is Griffin's largest personal donation to date, surpassing a $300 million gift he made to Harvard University in 2023. The pledge also exceeds the prior benchmark for university philanthropy — a $2 billion donation from Nike co-founder Phil Knight and his wife Penny Knight to Oregon Health & Science University in August 2025, according to CNBC.
