Kathryn Kirk, the mother of conservative organizer Charlie Kirk, has publicly defended her daughter-in-law, Erika Kirk, following Erika’s selection as CEO of Turning Point USA after Charlie’s death.
Charlie Kirk was shot on September 10, 2025, while beginning a speech at Utah Valley University. He was taken to hospital in critical condition and later died from his wounds. In the months since, Turning Point USA appointed Erika Kirk as its chief executive, a decision that has drawn intense media attention and strong public reactions.
Despite vocal criticism online and in the press, Kathryn told Vanity Fair the family has stood firmly behind Erika. In the interview Kathryn reflected on the family's shared grief and the personal knowledge they have of Charlie’s life and values.

“We knew Charlie in a way that no one else did. We can look at each other’s eyes, and we know the depth of our despair,” Kathryn said. “We were 100 percent behind her.”
Kathryn also described a growing bond with Erika since the tragedy. “Erika and I have, through the trauma, grown closer,” she told the magazine.
Erika Kirk has been candid about her mourning and the challenges of public life after the killing. Speaking at a campus event, she framed returning to university spaces as part of her healing process: “Being on campus right now for me is a spiritual reclaiming of territory.” She added that symbolic milestones have shaped her grieving: “There is a lot of symbolism in today. It’s Wednesday, seven weeks… the more I am coming to grips with the permanency of this nightmare, the more that I am starting to realize and witness that the enemy, he doesn’t want you.”
Charlie and Erika first met in 2018 at the opening of a Turning Point USA office, bonding over their shared commitment to conservative activism. Charlie later said he knew “almost immediately” that Erika was “the one.” The couple married three years after they met in a private, intimate ceremony in Scottsdale, Arizona, and during their marriage they had two children together.
As Turning Point USA navigates its next chapter, the family’s public support underscores the personal dimension behind Erika’s appointment and the continuing conversations about leadership, legacy, and grief in the wake of a violent loss.
