Erika Kirk told Vanity Fair in an interview published Sept. 29 that she briefly believed her husband, Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, would survive after he was shot on Sept. 10, 2025, while speaking at Utah Valley University as part of his American Comeback Tour. Charlie, 31, died at the scene.
Moments After the Attack
Erika said she was taking her mother to a medical appointment when Turning Point chief of staff Mikey McCoy called with the shocking news: 'Charlie, he's shot. He's shot.' Her first, anguished question was whether he was alive.

Although Charlie died almost immediately, Erika recalled to Vanity Fair that his heart continued to beat intermittently for a short time. While en route to Utah, she held on to the hope that he might recover. 'I remember thinking, Oh dear God, he's going to make it,' she said, remembering that she could detect a pulse at the airport.
'I want to see what they did to my husband. I didn't get a kiss goodbye this morning. I just want to kiss my husband,' Erika said she told hospital staff when she insisted on seeing him.
At the Hospital
Erika described a hospital officer's warning that reflected the severity of Charlie's condition: 'I can't tell you not to see your husband. But I've been doing this for more than 20 years. If it were my spouse, I wouldn't want to remember them this way.' Despite the caution, Erika said she wanted to say goodbye and kissed him. She later recalled that Charlie had a familiar 'smirk' rather than a look of sadness.

In a separate 2025 interview with Fox News, Erika described how frantic McCoy's call sounded: 'Charlie's been shot. He's been shot. Get the kids. Get security.' She said she ran from the medical center, collapsed in the parking lot, and scrambled to get their children and security as the 'unbelievable nightmare' unfolded.
The man accused of the shooting, Tyler James Robinson, faces multiple charges, including aggravated murder. Robinson has pleaded not guilty. A judge recently ruled the case may proceed to trial, and news reports indicate the next court hearing was scheduled for Oct. 23, 2025.
