The footwear sector’s philanthropic profile remains strong in 2026, highlighted by two major gifts from Phil and Penny Knight. The couple pledged $1 billion to the University of Oregon to build a new college of engineering and, a week earlier, gave $1.1 billion to Providence St. Vincent Medical Center and the Providence Heart Institute to advance women’s health and cardiovascular care. Their prior $2 billion gift to OHSU for cancer research further cements their role as leading donors in the region.
Knights' Billion-Dollar Gifts Keep Footwear Industry at the Forefront of Philanthropy

Year after year the footwear industry has deepened its commitments to philanthropy, a trend underscored in 2026 by two extraordinary gifts from Nike cofounder Phil Knight and his wife, Penny. The scale and timing of these donations have kept the shoe sector highly visible among philanthropic leaders.
Major Gifts and Their Purpose
On Wednesday, the University of Oregon announced that the Knights pledged $1 billion to fund the construction of a new college of engineering. Phil Knight, an alumnus from the Class of 1959, and his wife are longtime supporters of Portland-area institutions.
That pledge follows a $1.1 billion gift announced just a week earlier to Providence St. Vincent Medical Center and the Providence Heart Institute. The donation will help create Oregon’s first hospital dedicated to women’s health and support advances in cardiovascular treatment and care.
Continuing a Pattern of Large-Scale Giving
Last year the Knights committed a record $2 billion to Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) to support cancer care and research in the Portland community. Taken together, these recent gifts likely place the Knights among the top individual donors connected to the footwear industry.
While the Knights' generosity has drawn attention due to its size and focus on health and education, they are part of a broader philanthropic culture in the footwear sector: companies and founders across the industry continue to support causes ranging from community development to medical research.
Note: These donations highlight how private philanthropy can shape regional health care and higher education priorities and underscore the continued impact of leaders from the footwear industry.
