Iran's military on Sunday issued a stark warning to the United States, saying any renewed attacks on Iran would be met with sustained strikes on U.S. bases and interests across the Middle East.
"If you make a mistake, you will be the target of painful attacks," the Khatam al-Anbiya military headquarters said, according to the Fars news agency.
The statement added that "all of that country's deployment centres and interests in the region will be targeted with continuous, effective and painful attacks, without any restrictions or considerations."
Mohsen Rezaei, secretary general of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, told Al Jazeera that Iran would also target U.S. ships anywhere in the Indian Ocean if strikes on Iran were resumed, and said Iran's forces had acquired the capabilities required to carry out such attacks.
The Khatam al-Anbiya headquarters — which assumes operational command of Iran's armed forces in wartime — also warned regional governments against supporting any U.S. attack. It said any country deemed "complicit" could expect no restraint or leniency.
