Israeli strikes in Gaza killed five people, including two children, Palestinian officials said, despite a declared ceasefire nominally in place in the territory.
Seven-year-old Wafaa Aqila and her father were killed when a strike hit the vehicle they were traveling in after buying school supplies, the Palestinian Ministry of Education said. Wafaa had been due to start the new school year in days.
Hours later, an artillery strike hit the Sakina School in Deir el-Balah — a facility being used as a shelter for displaced families — killing Saadi Ghalia, a first-grade pupil, the ministry said.
“While children around the world prepare to return to school, in Gaza they are subjected to ‘killing and annihilation,’” the Palestinian Ministry of Education said in a statement.
Casualties and Official Tallies
The Gaza Health Ministry reported that at least five Palestinians were killed and 30 wounded in the past 24 hours, and that two additional people died after succumbing to wounds from earlier strikes. According to the Health Ministry’s tallies, at least 1,352 people have been killed and 4,511 wounded since the ceasefire took effect in October.
The Health Ministry additionally reports an overall toll of at least 73,658 Palestinians killed and 174,622 wounded
Although a ceasefire is in name, these incidents underscore continuing risks to civilians—especially children—living amid the ongoing hostilities and displacement in Gaza.
