President Donald Trump’s decision to bar several news organizations from the White House produced an awkward moment on Monday when his remarks at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new South Lawn helipad were largely inaudible on broadcast video.
Video carried by conservative outlet Newsmax showed Trump speaking at the event, but because the regular White House TV press pool was absent the audio on the shared footage was effectively missing.
“There’s no microphone because the pool cameras aren’t there,” a Newsmax presenter said over the clip. “So maybe…this is one example of it backfiring just a little bit.”
Trump announced on Truth Social that he was excluding CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House, accusing them of “constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS!” Other major networks — including ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News and NBC — then declined to perform pool duty for the helipad event in protest.
Why the Audio Was Missing
The White House TV press pool operates on rotation: one outlet supplies cameras and microphones for major presidential events and shares the footage with other outlets. CNN had been scheduled to supply the pool for Monday’s ceremony but, after being excluded, could not fulfill that role. In a memo seen by Politico, Bryan Boughton, Fox News’ Washington bureau chief and chair of the TV pool, wrote, “There will be no replacement pool put in place.”
Legal Response and New Broadcast Platform
In a joint statement, the excluded outlets said they are pursuing legal action to defend their First Amendment rights. CNN reported that an emergency request will be filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia and could be heard as soon as this week.
Following the exclusions, the White House launched a YouTube livestream called TRUMP TV, which it says will stream highlights of the president’s activities around the clock. The channel has shown recent remarks, including his Mount Rushmore speech commemorating America’s 250th anniversary and his 2025 commencement address at West Point.
