Israeli forces announced on June 7, 2026, that they have uncovered a large, interconnected Hezbollah tunnel complex beneath Beaufort Ridge (Beaufort Castle) in southern Lebanon following a recent operation to retake the position.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said troops from the Golani Brigade, supported by Maglan commandos and Yahalom combat engineers, discovered multiple tunnels and chambers that are still being mapped. The military described the installation as a "significant" subterranean network intended to provide emergency shelter and operational capacity for Hezbollah fighters after losing the castle.
What the IDF Found
According to the IDF, the network was built to house hundreds of operatives and includes long-term living and combat-support facilities. Reported discoveries include:

- Living quarters with shower and restroom facilities, kitchens and multiple habitation rooms.
- Medical infrastructure, including an operating room and advanced medical equipment.
- Robust utility installations such as plumbing and electrical systems.
- Weapons stores and combat gear, including an anti-tank missile launcher, anti-tank missiles, grenades, ammunition and other equipment.
- Extensive defensive arrays described by the IDF as capable of targeting troops and civilians from underground positions.
In one passage roughly one kilometre long, soldiers reportedly located six underground shafts, a weapons storage room and multiple service and living areas. The IDF has released video infographics mapping parts of the network.
Operational Context
The retaking of Beaufort Ridge came at the end of May, restoring control of a position Israel held from 1982 until its 2000 withdrawal from southern Lebanon. Israeli public broadcaster KAN and several news outlets, including the Jerusalem Post, contributed to reporting the discovery.
"The complex appears designed for prolonged use, combining habitation, medical care and offensive capabilities," the IDF said in a statement.
Clearance and mapping operations remain ongoing as troops work to determine the full extent of the tunnel system and secure the area.
