Becca Good made her first public appearance on Feb. 7 at a Minneapolis memorial for her wife, Renee Nicole Good, who was shot and killed by a federal immigration agent on Jan. 7. Statement Read at Memorial

Although Becca did not speak directly to the crowd, she provided a written statement that Rabbi Arielle Lekach-Rosenberg read aloud. In it, Becca thanked the Minneapolis community for practical and emotional support and praised neighbors who organized food, rides and childcare while the family grieved.

“Minneapolis has shown me that even in the middle of grief and fear, people still show up for each other,” Becca wrote. “Renee and I believed that if we lived every day in the world as we wanted it to be, we could build toward making that world a reality. So I am doing that every day — and every night, as I kiss my son at bedtime and tell him things are going to get better.”

Becca also urged that other victims be remembered, noting the Jan. 24 killing of ICU nurse Alex Prettie by federal agents in Minneapolis and stressing that many families suffer similar losses even if their names are not widely known.

Remembering Renee

The statement and remarks at the memorial highlighted Renee’s warmth, humor and steady presence as a parent and community member: “She was always helping out, making things a little better for others,” Becca wrote. Attendees heard personal recollections from Renee’s sister, Annie Ganger, who thanked the local community for its solidarity and described Renee as hilarious and full of life.

What Happened

According to multiple reports and video released by authorities, Renee had just dropped her son off at school and was driving home with Becca when they encountered a group of ICE agents. Footage captured by an agent shows Renee sitting in the driver’s seat of a Honda Pilot while an agent circled the vehicle and Becca spoke to one of the officers. When Renee began to drive away, an agent later identified as Jonathan Ross fired a shot that struck her. The vehicle continued and later crashed down the road.

Witness accounts and reporting describe the chaotic aftermath. A nearby resident who spoke with PEOPLE recounted asking Becca if she had anyone to call; Becca replied, “That’s my wife. They shot her in the f----ing head, dude. This is ridiculous!”

Family

Renee leaves three children: a 6-year-old son shared with Becca, and a 12-year-old daughter and 15-year-old son from a previous marriage. Renee had also previously been married to Timmy Macklin Jr., who died in 2023 at age 36. Family members and community supporters continue to demand accountability and remembrance for Renee and other victims.

The memorial emphasized both grief and community action—calling on attendees to remember names, support grieving families and uphold the kindness Renee and Becca said they lived by.
