Dozens were arrested Saturday outside the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building in Minneapolis as police dispersed a protest marking the one-month anniversary of Renee Good's death after she was shot by an ICE officer on Jan. 7. At least 42 people were taken into custody after some demonstrators threw objects and damaged property during a standoff that left a deputy injured. Separate memorials honored Good and Alex Pretti, who was killed on Jan. 24 during an altercation with immigration officers. The federal government said it will pull about 700 immigration officers from Minnesota after local cooperation agreements, though state and local officials dispute some federal characterizations of the killings.

Police arrested dozens of demonstrators Saturday outside the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building in Minneapolis as officers moved to disperse a protest marking the one-month anniversary of Renee Good's death after she was shot by a federal immigration officer.

Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, was shot and killed on Jan. 7 after an encounter with officers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in a Minneapolis neighborhood. Her death, and the subsequent killing of another Minneapolis resident, Alex Pretti, on Jan. 24, have fueled nationwide criticism of stepped-up federal immigration enforcement.

Hundreds gathered across the street from the federal building around midday. According to the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, unrest escalated when some demonstrators began throwing bottles, chunks of ice and other objects — including sex toys — at a police line protecting the property. The sheriff's office said a deputy was struck in the head and the windshield of a squad vehicle was smashed.

Authorities declared the assembly unlawful and ordered the crowd to disperse. Many complied, but about 100 people remained in a standoff with deputies, state troopers and state conservation officers, the Star Tribune reported. The sheriff's office later told KSTP that at least 42 arrests were made during the action.

Ceremony in the Park

Separately, several hundred people gathered on a snow-covered field in a Minneapolis park to honor Good and Pretti. Organizers criticized the federal immigration operation in Minnesota, describing it as an occupation by federal agents.

Lakota spiritual leader Chief Arvol Looking Horse led a ceremony as attendees held signs and American flags. Musicians and poets also paid tribute to the two people who have become central figures in the national debate over immigration enforcement.

Details of the Killings

Bystander video of the Jan. 7 incident shows three ICE agents surrounding Good's Honda Pilot a few blocks from her home. One officer approached the stopped vehicle, grabbed the door handle and ordered the driver to open the door. As the car moved forward, another ICE officer standing in front of the vehicle fired at close range, then jumped back as the SUV advanced. The Trump administration described Good as attempting to run over an officer, a characterization rejected by state and local officials.

In the Jan. 24 case, video shows officers wrestling Alex Pretti to the ground during a street altercation. An officer can be heard saying 'He's got a gun' after spotting a firearm Pretti was licensed to carry, and two officers then opened fire.

Federal Response and Local Reaction

On Wednesday, the administration's border enforcement chief, Tom Homan, announced plans to withdraw roughly 700 immigration officers from Minnesota — about a quarter of those deployed there — after state and local officials agreed to cooperate by turning over immigrants arrested locally. Homan did not specify when broader operations in the state would end.

Becca Good, Renee Good's wife, said the enforcement effort is harming many people in Minneapolis and that numerous victims remain unnamed: 'You know my wife's name and you know Alex's name, but there are many others in this city being harmed that you don't know — their families are hurting just like mine, even if they don't look like mine. They are neighbors, friends, co-workers, classmates. And we must also know their names. Because this shouldn't happen to anyone.'

Officials from the sheriff's office did not respond to requests for further comment from The Associated Press on Saturday afternoon. Reporting and video from local outlets have been central to public understanding of both incidents.
