An independent autopsy ordered by Renee Good’s family found she sustained three gunshot wounds: to the left forearm, the right breast, and a fatal wound that traversed her head from left temple to the right side. The family says a credentialed independent pathologist performed the examination and that Jan. 7 video evidence will support their case. DHS officials have defended the ICE officer involved while local leaders have criticized the federal operation; the FBI is investigating and state officials say they have been excluded from the probe.

An independent autopsy commissioned by Renee Good’s family found she sustained three gunshot wounds — including a fatal wound that entered near the left temple and exited the right side of her head — attorneys for the family said Wednesday. The family retained a "highly respected" and credentialed independent medical pathologist to perform the examination.

Autopsy Details

The lawyers said one shot struck Good’s left forearm and another struck her right breast but did not penetrate major organs; neither of those wounds was immediately life-threatening. According to the family's pathologist, a third bullet entered the left side of Good’s head near the temple and exited on the right side. The report also noted a graze wound.

Family’s Legal Team And Evidence

Lead attorney Antonio M. Romanucci said the evidence the family is collecting, including video from Jan. 7, 2026, will support their case. "The video evidence depicting the events of January 7, 2026, is clear, particularly when viewed through the standards of reasonable policing and totality of circumstances," Romanucci said in a statement.

Official Responses And Local Reaction

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office has not released its findings to the family or their attorneys; a search of the office’s online case listings Wednesday night did not produce a record for Good. Good, 37, was shot while seated in the driver’s seat of her SUV during an encounter with Jonathan Ross, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer, in a residential neighborhood of Minneapolis on Jan. 7.

Cellphone video of the incident shows Good’s partner outside the SUV calling the officer "big boy" and demanding he show his face. Other officers at the scene are heard ordering Good to exit the vehicle; she is seen turning the steering wheel away from the officer and beginning to drive. Multiple gunshots are audible before Good’s SUV struck a parked car. Video recorded by the ICE officer reportedly captures a male voice using an expletive immediately before the crash.

Officials from the Department of Homeland Security defended the officer involved. Kristi Noem publicly labeled Good a "domestic terrorist" and said the officer acted in self-defense; DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin later described Good as refusing to comply with officers’ commands. McLaughlin wrote in an email: "If you impede law enforcement operations, ignore law commands, and use a deadly weapon to kill or cause bodily harm to a federal law enforcement officer there are dangerous, and in this case deadly, consequences. This was entirely preventable."

Investigation Status

The FBI is investigating the shooting. State officials said they have been barred from participating in the probe. Good’s attorneys have described her and her partner as "responsible community members who lived peacefully and did not engage in harmful conduct toward others, including the federal agents involved on January 7, 2026." Local leaders, including Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, have criticized the federal immigration operations in the area and questioned the circumstances that led to the shooting.

Note: The autopsy referenced here was conducted by the medical expert retained by Good’s family; the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office had not publicly released its official findings at the time of this report.
