A multi-county crime spree that began with a stolen Corvette ended Wednesday in a deadly shootout near Highway 87 in San Jose. Authorities identified the suspect as 30-year-old Mohamed Husien, who allegedly stole a Corvette in Sacramento on Jan. 17 and later carjacked another in San Jose. The pursuit involved ALPR tips and a police helicopter; the suspect was killed and a San Jose sergeant was critically wounded and is expected to recover. The investigation is ongoing and the medical examiner will determine the manner of death.

A multi-county crime spree that began with a stolen Corvette culminated Wednesday in a deadly shootout that left the suspect dead and a veteran San Jose police sergeant critically wounded, authorities said.

What Happened

San Jose Police Department officials announced Thursday that the wounded sergeant is being treated at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. He is described as in good spirits, remains in critical but stable condition, and is expected to recover.

At a Thursday news briefing, San Jose Police Chief Paul Joseph identified the suspect as 30-year-old Mohamed Husien of Davis, California. Chief Joseph said the alleged crime spree began Jan. 17 in Sacramento, when Husien reportedly stole a red Corvette and then drove into the Bay Area, committing multiple robberies across jurisdictions.

Authorities say the violence escalated Wednesday after Husien allegedly carried out another armed carjacking at a San Jose auto mall, stealing a green Corvette. San Jose's Real Time Intelligence Center used automated license plate reader (ALPR) cameras to flag the stolen red Corvette and provided patrol units with recent locations of the vehicle.

Pursuit and Exchanges of Gunfire

A San Jose police helicopter tracked the vehicle as it traveled south into San Benito County and alerted Hollister police and county sheriff's deputies at about 2:48 p.m. Officers located the car near Central Avenue and Miller Road and engaged in a slow-speed pursuit that ended after the vehicle became disabled near Buena Vista Road and Westside Boulevard.

Police say the suspect, armed with a handgun, abandoned the disabled car and fired at officers before fleeing on foot. Deputies later confronted him near Buena Vista Road and Line Street, where gunfire was exchanged. Authorities say the suspect then carjacked another vehicle at gunpoint and headed back toward San Jose, firing at California Highway Patrol officers during the pursuit.

The chase concluded near Julian and Terraine streets, just off Highway 87, where a final confrontation occurred. Police said the suspect was killed during that exchange and that the San Jose sergeant was struck by gunfire. Neighbors reported hearing roughly 20 to 30 shots, and a portion of Highway 87 was closed for several hours while investigators processed the scene.

Unconfirmed Social Video And Next Steps

Video circulating on social media appears to show the suspect entering and exiting a police vehicle before collapsing as officers approached. Authorities said they could not immediately confirm whether the suspect entered a patrol vehicle. The medical examiner will determine the manner of death.

"Every officer involved in yesterday's harrowing incident will carry the heaviness of what happened for the rest of their lives," Chief Joseph said. "Some members of the public who were caught in the crossfire described it as the closest thing to war they have ever witnessed."

San Jose Police Officers' Association President Steve Slack praised responding officers for their "incredible bravery," and San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan noted the wounded officer's first words at the hospital—"Make sure someone takes care of my dogs"—as a reflection of the department's character.

The investigation remains active. Fox News Digital said it reached out to the San Jose Police Department for further comment, and authorities continue coordinating with partner agencies while the medical examiner completes its review.
