North Carolina Unveils Acrocanthosaurus Specialty License Plate — Support the Museum and Its 'Terror of the South'
The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles has teamed up with the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences to launch a specialty license plate featuring the skeleton of Acrocanthosaurus, the museum’s iconic “Terror of the South.”
About the Dinosaur
This Cretaceous predator roamed the southern half of North America roughly 110 million years ago. Raleigh’s Museum of Natural Sciences houses the most complete Acrocanthosaurus skeleton ever discovered — and it is the only genuine Acrocanthosaurus skeleton currently on public display anywhere in the world.
Price and Purpose
The specialty plates cost $30 each. For every plate sold, $20 is donated directly to the Friends of the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences to support research, exhibits, educational programs and conservation initiatives.
How to Order
To order online, visit myNCDMV and enter your current license plate information plus the last five digits of your vehicle title number. After payment, expect delivery by mail in approximately six to eight weeks.
If you prefer a paper application, mail the completed form to the NCDMV with payment by check, cashier’s check or money order.
Why It Matters
Buying the plate lets drivers show support for North Carolina’s paleontological heritage while directly funding the museum’s scientific research, public exhibits and education programs.
