Trump Says He Is Voiding Biden's Autopen-Signed Pardons and Documents

President Trump announced he will void documents he says were signed by Joe Biden using an autopen, naming pardons and commutations. An autopen reproduces signatures for routine or ceremonial documents and has been used by presidents from both parties. Trump posted the declaration on Truth Social, calling such items "fully and completely terminated" and "of no Legal effect." The legal and constitutional implications are uncertain and could prompt challenges in court.

Trump Says He Is Voiding Biden's Autopen-Signed Pardons and Documents

President Donald Trump said on Dec. 2 that he is annulling documents he says were signed by his predecessor, Joe Biden, using an autopen, explicitly naming pardons and commutations.

An autopen is a mechanical device that reproduces a person's signature with precision and is commonly used for high-volume or ceremonial items. Presidents from both parties have employed autopens to sign letters, proclamations and other routine documents.

Anyone receiving "Pardons," "Commutations," or any other Legal Document so signed, please be advised that said Document has been fully and completely terminated, and is of no Legal effect.

Trump posted that message on his Truth Social account. The declaration raises immediate questions about its legal and constitutional effect: whether a sitting president can unilaterally cancel pardons or other acts issued by a predecessor—especially those signed with an autopen—would likely be contested in court.
