Woman Arrested After Allegedly Slitting Boyfriend’s Throat on Thanksgiving; Told 911, "Today Is My Independence Day"

Tamala Rudeseal, 52, was taken into custody and booked on charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault after authorities say she attacked her boyfriend inside a Mesa apartment on the evening of Nov. 27.

According to court documents, Rudeseal called 911 at about 8 p.m. and told dispatchers she had cut her partner's throat. In recorded statements cited by investigators, she allegedly said, "I did just try to murder you," and, "Today is my Independence Day."

Officers who responded to an apartment complex on South Country Club Drive detained Rudeseal at the scene while medics transported the male victim to a hospital for treatment.

First responders recovered a large folding hunting knife at the location. Medical reports and police records indicate the victim suffered a deep slash from his left ear toward the center of his neck.

Statements to investigators

In a police interview, court documents say Rudeseal acknowledged making an earlier verbal threat to the man — telling him, "I'm going to slice your [expletive] throat." When officers asked directly whether she had tried to kill him, she allegedly replied, "Yes. God, I hope he is dead; it'd be a favor to me, his wife, and his children."

Investigators also recorded the victim saying Rudeseal often became depressed around the holidays and that the couple had argued earlier on Thanksgiving.

The Maricopa County Attorney's Office has confirmed the case is under review by prosecutors. No additional public disposition has been announced.
