Authorities arrested 46-year-old Malang Jan Akbari on Jan. 12 after his son called 911 and reported his father had said, 'I killed your mom.' Police found the mother bleeding in the kitchen and issued an Amber Alert for the couple’s 18-month-old, who was later located safe at a relative’s home. Detectives say Akbari confessed, citing suspected infidelity; his attorney says he will plead not guilty due to severe mental impairment and notes Akbari’s military service. Bond and preliminary hearing dates are scheduled for Jan. 21 and Feb. 19.

A Missouri man has been charged with first-degree murder and child endangerment after authorities say he stabbed his wife and left the home with the couple’s 18-month-old daughter on Jan. 12.

Details Of The Incident

Forty-six-year-old Malang Jan Akbari was arrested Jan. 12, according to Cole County public arrest records and court documents from the 19th Circuit Court. Authorities were alerted when Akbari’s son called 911 at about 12:25 p.m., reporting that his father had called him and said, 'I killed your mom, and I left the house.' The son then went to the family home and found his mother bleeding and unresponsive on the kitchen floor, the records state.

An Amber Alert was issued for the 18-month-old child after the son reported the toddler was missing and that the father was likely driving the family’s 2015 blue Honda Odyssey. Police located the van later that day and took Akbari into custody; officers recovered the child safe at a relative’s home. According to investigators, the relative told police that Akbari had dropped off the toddler before fleeing.

Confession, Motive And Allegations

Detectives say they interviewed Akbari with the assistance of an interpreter. Court documents allege that he confessed to killing his wife, explaining that the couple had argued that day because he suspected she was unfaithful. Investigators say Akbari described stabbing his wife, placing her on the floor and putting a pillow under her head while she bled. He allegedly then picked up the child, said a prayer and left the residence.

“I loved her. I sacrificed everything for her. I made a mistake. I do regret this. There was no other option for me,”

— words Akbari reportedly told detectives, according to court records.

Charges And Legal Proceedings

Akbari is charged with first-degree murder, endangering the welfare of a child and armed criminal action. His attorney, David Moen, told PEOPLE that Akbari is presumed innocent and has entered a not-guilty plea based on what Moen described as a severely impaired mental condition. Moen also said Akbari served in the Afghan Army for many years and sustained injuries during that service. Court records show a bond review is scheduled for Jan. 21 and a preliminary hearing is set for Feb. 19.

These are allegations; the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The account above is based on Cole County arrest records and 19th Circuit Court documents.
