Suspected militants ambushed a vehicle in the Bannu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Tuesday, killing a local government administrator, two of his bodyguards and a passerby, regional police said. The official identified the slain administrator as Shah Wali, who served in Miran Shah near the Afghan border.

The attack occurred a day after a suicide bombing near a police vehicle in Lakki Marwat district that killed a senior police officer. Authorities said the two incidents have raised alarm about an uptick in militant activity across northwestern Pakistan.

No group has claimed responsibility for the ambush, but officials say suspicion is likely to fall on the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). The TTP is distinct from, though broadly aligned with, Afghanistan’s Taliban administration and has been blamed by Pakistani authorities for a number of previous attacks.

Wider context

Militant violence in Pakistan has been increasing, straining relations with neighboring Afghanistan. Islamabad accuses the TTP of operating freely from Afghan territory since the Taliban returned to power in 2021, an allegation Kabul denies.

Tensions intensified after Afghanistan’s Taliban government accused Pakistan of an Oct. 9 drone strike in Kabul. Cross-border clashes followed, killing dozens of soldiers, civilians and militants before a Qatar-brokered cease-fire took effect on Oct. 19. The truce remains in place, though recent talks in Istanbul ended without a new agreement.

Local authorities said investigations into the ambush are ongoing and that security measures in the region may be heightened as officials seek to determine responsibility and prevent further attacks.
