Fresh Violence in Gaza and West Bank Raises Fears for Fragile Ceasefire

What happened: Israeli forces shot and killed a man near Bureij refugee camp in Gaza and two Palestinians in the West Bank accused of carrying out separate attacks that wounded three Israelis.

Context: The Gaza Health Ministry says more than 350 Palestinians have died since the Oct. 11 ceasefire. Israeli operations across the West Bank have intensified since Oct. 7, 2023, prompting Palestinian complaints of excessive force.

Significance: Rising settler violence, Palestinian attacks and strikes in southern Lebanon have raised fears the fragile truce could collapse.

Israeli forces shot and killed a man near the eastern edge of the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza, and separately killed two Palestinians in the occupied West Bank who were accused of carrying out attacks that wounded three Israelis, officials said Tuesday.

The Gaza Health Ministry reported that more than 350 Palestinians have died across the territory since a ceasefire took effect on Oct. 11. Israel’s military did not immediately comment on the Gaza shooting; in past incidents it has said many of its actions followed fire at Israeli forces. Both Israeli authorities and Hamas have accused the other of violating the ceasefire terms, raising tensions across the territory.

In the West Bank, the Israeli military said troops shot and killed a suspect who stabbed two soldiers during a confrontation near Ateret, an Israeli settlement north of Ramallah. The army said the episode is under review. The Palestinian Health Ministry reported an 18-year-old was killed north of Ramallah, though it was not immediately clear whether that was the same person.

Also in the West Bank, the military said troops fatally shot a Palestinian who had earlier carried out a car-ramming attack that wounded a soldier near Hebron. The army said the suspect attempted to flee while endangering soldiers and was shot dead; the Palestinian Health Ministry identified him as a 17-year-old resident of Hebron.

Hamas released a statement praising the Hebron attack as part of "the legitimate response of our people" to Israeli raids in the West Bank, though the group did not claim responsibility. The Israeli military has intensified operations across the West Bank since Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023 offensive, saying the goal is to root out militants. Palestinian officials and rights groups say many of those killed in recent months have been stone-throwers, protesters or uninvolved civilians.

Recent weeks have also seen an increase in attacks by Israeli settlers on Palestinian civilians, and Palestinian assailants carried out a stabbing-and-car-ramming incident last month that killed an Israeli man. On Tuesday, Israel conducted another round of strikes in southern Lebanon amid accusations that Hezbollah has not disarmed since a U.S.-brokered ceasefire last year.

Analysts and local officials warned that the recent flare-ups — including the Gaza shooting, West Bank killings and cross-border strikes — threaten to unravel the fragile truce and spread unrest across multiple fronts.
