Apple reshuffles AI leadership: John Giannandrea to retire as Amar Subramanya named VP of AI

John Giannandrea, Apple's senior vice president for machine learning and AI strategy, will step down and serve as an advisor before retiring in the spring. Tim Cook praised Giannandrea's contributions after nearly eight years at the company. Amar Subramanya, who spent 16 years at Google and most recently served as corporate VP of AI at Microsoft, has been named Apple's vice president of AI. The move reflects intensifying competition among tech companies for top AI talent.

Apple announced that John Giannandrea, senior vice president for machine learning and AI strategy, will step down from his current role and transition to an advisory position before retiring in the spring.

Apple CEO Tim Cook thanked Giannandrea for his contributions to the company’s AI efforts and for helping to advance products that enrich users' lives. Giannandrea has been with Apple for nearly eight years and previously held leadership roles at Google.

The company has appointed Amar Subramanya as its new vice president of AI. Subramanya most recently served as corporate vice president of AI at Microsoft and spent 16 years at Google, where he led engineering for Gemini, the company’s AI assistant. He moved to Microsoft in July and now joins Apple to lead its AI initiatives.

Why this matters

The change comes as competition for top AI talent intensifies across major technology firms. Companies are offering large compensation packages and aggressively recruiting senior engineers and researchers to accelerate product development and research.

Apple said Giannandrea will remain involved during the transition to ensure continuity while Subramanya assumes leadership of the team and the company’s AI strategy.
