U.S. Treasury Opens Investigation into Claims Minnesota Funds Reached Al-Shabaab, Secretary Says

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Dec. 1 that the U.S. Treasury Department has opened an investigation into allegations that tax dollars from Minnesota may have been diverted to the Al-Shabaab militant group in Somalia.

Bessent said the inquiry was announced days after President Donald Trump called Minnesota a "hub of fraudulent money laundering activity" under Democratic Governor Tim Walz. Those remarks followed unverified media reports, which were shared by several Republican lawmakers, alleging that Al-Shabaab benefited from fraud carried out in Minnesota.

Officials have not yet released details about the scope or timeline of the Treasury's probe. Governor Tim Walz's office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
