Twin Switch in Texas: Rep. Troy Nehls to Retire, Endorses Identical Twin Trever for His Seat

Troy Nehls, a Texas Republican and vocal Trump ally, announced he will retire from Congress to focus on family after more than 30 years in law enforcement and six years in office. He endorsed his identical twin brother, Trever Nehls, who immediately declared his candidacy and pledged to continue a pro-Trump, border-security agenda. The announcement comes amid contentious Texas redistricting, though the district is viewed as relatively safe for Republicans.

Twin Switch in Texas: Rep. Troy Nehls to Retire, Endorses Identical Twin Trever for His Seat

Texas Republican Rep. Troy Nehls announced on Facebook that he will retire from Congress after six years in office to return home and focus on his family. Citing more than 30 years in law enforcement and conversations with his wife and daughters over the Thanksgiving holiday, Nehls said the decision follows a desire to put family first.

In the same post, Troy said he had informed former President Donald Trump of his plans and formally endorsed his identical twin brother, Trever Nehls, as his preferred successor. "Our district deserves a representative who already knows the people, the values and the challenges we face," Troy wrote, adding that Trever "shares the same commitment to defending our Constitution, securing our borders and putting America First." He also said he is confident Trever will earn President Trump's endorsement.

Trever confirmed his candidacy in a separate Facebook post, promising to "follow in Troy's footsteps and stand shoulder-to-shoulder with President Trump to defend our conservative values, secure the border, protect our families and oppose the reckless and radical agenda that Democrats continue to press upon the American people."

Troy Nehls, 57, was first elected to Congress in 2020 and has been known as a staunch supporter of Donald Trump. Last year he drew attention for saying, "If Donald Trump says, 'Jump three feet high and scratch your head,' we all jump three feet high and scratch our head." He also generated headlines for wearing a Trump-themed outfit to the 2024 State of the Union — including an American flag bow tie and a T-shirt bearing Trump's mugshot with the words "Never surrender." Troy has at times used symbolic messaging tied to high-profile cases, including wearing a sticker referencing Laken Riley, a nursing student whose murder prompted passage of the Laken Riley Act in January.

Trever has previously sought local office. After Troy left the Fort Bend County sheriff's post to join Congress, Trever ran to replace him but lost to Eric Fagan. Trever also ran unsuccessfully for Fort Bend County Judge in 2022.

Political context

Troy's retirement comes amid contentious redistricting in Texas aimed at creating more Republican districts, though his seat has generally been viewed as safe for his party. Several other Texas Republicans — including Reps. Morgan Luttrell, Jodey Arrington, Chip Roy, Wesley Hunt and Michael McCaul — have also announced plans to leave Congress or are expected to step down following the 2026 midterms, reshaping the state's delegation.

What to watch: Whether Trever Nehls secures key endorsements, including from former President Trump, and how primary challengers respond to an immediate family succession bid in a politically competitive environment.
