Khaleda Zia Hospitalised in 'Very Critical' Condition, Supporters Urge Prayers

Former Bangladeshi prime minister Khaleda Zia, 80, remains in intensive care at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka after being admitted on 23 November with a lung infection, party officials said. Her personal physician reported that she is "responding to the treatment," even as senior party figures describe her state as "very critical." Family members and supporters have appealed for prayers for her recovery.

Medical Status and Underlying Conditions

Dr A Z M Zahid Hossein, Zia's personal physician, said her condition has remained "in the same stage for the last three days" and that she is receiving treatment for a lung infection. He asked well-wishers to pray that she continues to respond to care.

Zia is known to have multiple chronic health problems, including heart disease, liver and kidney issues, diabetes, lung conditions, arthritis and eye ailments. She has a permanent pacemaker and previously underwent coronary stenting.

Plans and Appeals

Senior party leaders have described her condition as "very critical." Party officials said an air ambulance has been placed on standby to transfer Zia abroad for advanced treatment if her condition stabilises.

Her eldest son, Tarique Rahman, who has been living abroad, posted a message on social media expressing gratitude for supporters' prayers and asking people to continue praying for her early recovery.

Political Context and Support

Khaleda Zia served three terms as prime minister. She was jailed in 2018 on corruption charges and was previously barred from travelling abroad for medical care; she was released last year. Despite ongoing health challenges, Zia has vowed to participate in campaigning ahead of elections expected in February 2026, in which her party is widely viewed as a leading contender.

Supporters gathered outside the hospital, describing Zia as an important political figure for the country. An interim national leader commented that her recovery is crucial during a transitional period toward democracy.

Doctor: "In doctors' language, we say 'she is responding to the treatment'. Please pray so that she can continue to receive this treatment."
Family statement: "We express our heartfelt thanks and gratitude for all your prayers and love for the highly respected Begum Khaleda Zia. We fervently request you to continue your prayers for her early recovery."
