Journalist, 33, Dies After Falling About 80 Feet From Eroded Cliff While Taking Photo

Leticia Lembi, a 33-year-old journalist and marketing consultant, died after falling approximately 80 feet from a rocky cliff at Los Acantilados near Mar del Plata on Nov. 26. Witnesses say she slipped while standing on a deteriorating beach ledge attempting to take a photograph. Authorities believe she died on impact and her body was recovered from the shore a few hours after the fall.

Local accounts describe the stairway and viewing ledge where Lembi had been standing as badly eroded from years of coastal wear. Despite the unsafe condition, the spot remained popular with visitors seeking ocean views and photo opportunities.

Investigation

A prosecutor visited the scene and investigators are treating the death as accidental; there are currently no signs that foul play was involved. Authorities continue to document the site as part of the ongoing inquiry.

Background

Lembi had been attending her marketing agency’s year-end gathering; she had worked with the firm since August 2021, which was founded by her cousin, Santiago Escudero. She held a degree in journalism and previously served as a correspondent in 2020 for La Voz del Pueblo.

"She was very resourceful in what she did, she covered the beaches in Claromecó for us, we spent a lot of time with her. We stayed in pretty good contact, but she hadn't worked with us for a long time, because she started at an independent agency," said María Ramona Maciel, director at La Voz del Pueblo. "She came from a traditional family in Tres Arroyos; we know her parents very well, and we are all very dismayed; we can't believe it."

The community and colleagues expressed shock and sorrow at Lembi's sudden death. Officials have warned visitors to avoid unstable cliff edges and eroded stairways along the coastline while investigations and safety assessments continue.
