A 49-year-old South Miami woman was arrested after police say she attacked her boyfriend with a machete, slicing his right elbow during a confrontation at her apartment.

What happened

Authorities say the couple first argued on the evening of Nov. 20 during a date at a Texas Roadhouse in the Fontainebleau area after the man confronted the woman about a photo that appeared to show her with another man. He left the restaurant that night.

The dispute reportedly escalated the next day, Nov. 21, when the man returned to the woman's apartment near Southwest 72nd Street and 62nd Avenue to return medication, glasses and a mug. According to the arrest report, the woman became enraged, locked the bedroom door and refused to let him leave.

Police say she then produced a machete. The victim attempted to grab his keys and flee; the report alleges she swung the weapon and sliced his right elbow while shouting threats. The injured man ran to his car and drove himself to the South Miami Hospital emergency department, where staff treated a deep laceration to his elbow.

Arrest and charges

Officers arrested the woman at her home the evening of Nov. 21. She was booked into the local correctional center and faces multiple charges, including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, attempted murder with a deadly weapon and false imprisonment with a deadly weapon.

At a bond hearing on Nov. 22, a judge ordered no contact between the defendant and the victim, denied bond on the attempted murder charge, and set a combined $15,000 bond for the aggravated battery and false imprisonment counts.

Police and corrections officials have been contacted for comment. The case remains under investigation and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
