Columbus police say a firearm recovered on Michael McKee’s property matches the weapon believed to have killed Monique and Spencer Tepe. McKee, 39, was arrested Jan. 10 near his Rockford, Illinois medical office and faces two counts of aggravated murder with premeditation in Franklin County. The couple were found dead on Dec. 30 while their two young children slept at home; surveillance footage and vehicle tracking helped lead investigators to McKee. Authorities say the probe is ongoing and officials are coordinating his extradition back to Ohio.
Firearm Linked to Slain Columbus Couple Found on Ex-Husband’s Property; Doctor Arrested in Illinois, Police Say

Columbus police announced that a firearm recovered on the property of Michael McKee matches the weapon investigators believe was used to kill Monique and Spencer Tepe.
Police Chief Elaine Bryant said at a Jan. 14 news conference that the matching firearm was among several weapons seized during a search of McKee’s property. She declined to provide additional specifics about the gun or its exact location, saying the investigation remains in the early stages and officials do not want to jeopardize the prosecution.
Arrest And Charges
McKee, 39, was taken into custody on Jan. 10 by federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives near his medical office in Rockford, Illinois. Rockford is roughly 80 miles west of Chicago; authorities said McKee was arrested about 450 miles from the Columbus crime scene. He was booked into the Winnebago County Jail pending extradition to Ohio.
Prosecutors in Franklin County have charged McKee with two counts of aggravated murder with premeditation in the deaths of his ex-wife, Monique, 39, and her husband, Spencer, 37. McKee has not spoken publicly since his arrest and remained silent during his first Winnebago County court appearance on Jan. 12. His attorney said he will invoke his Fifth Amendment right to remain silent and intends to plead not guilty after waiving an extradition hearing.
Details Of The Killings And Investigation
The couple were found fatally shot inside their Columbus home on Dec. 30, just days after their fifth wedding anniversary. Police say the killings occurred while the couple’s two young children, ages 4 and 1, were asleep in their bedrooms.
An arrest warrant filed in Franklin County Court says detectives identified a suspect via neighborhood surveillance video and traced that person to a vehicle that arrived shortly before the homicides and left soon afterward. Chief Bryant said investigators have evidence that McKee had possession of that vehicle both before and after the shootings and that police were able to track the vehicle to Illinois.
Background
At the time of his arrest, McKee was employed at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, a position he accepted after leaving a previous job in Las Vegas and relocating to the Chicago area. Illinois licensing records indicate he was licensed to practice in that state beginning in October 2024. Public records show McKee purchased a penthouse apartment in Chicago for $400,000 in July 2025.
McKee and Monique met while attending Ohio State University and were married in 2015. They divorced in 2017 after less than two years of marriage.
Investigation Status: Columbus investigators say the case remains active as they continue to develop evidence and coordinate McKee’s return from Illinois to Ohio for arraignment.
