24 Palestinians Killed in Gaza Strikes as Fragile Truce Shows Cracks

At least 24 Palestinians were killed and 87 wounded in Israeli strikes across Gaza, officials say, in attacks that underscore the fragility of a US-brokered truce that began on October 10. The Palestinian Health Ministry reports hundreds of casualties since the ceasefire, and claims of senior Hamas fatalities were made by Israeli authorities. Hamas condemned the strikes, and a UN spokesperson warned of a sharp rise in settler violence and actions in the West Bank that may amount to war crimes. International mediators are urged to intervene to prevent further escalation.

At least 24 Palestinians, including children, were killed and 87 wounded on Saturday in a series of Israeli strikes across the Gaza Strip, Gaza authorities reported. Attacks struck Gaza City and central areas including Deir el-Balah and the Nuseirat refugee camp.

Local officials say the strikes occurred despite a US-brokered ceasefire that took effect on October 10. The Palestinian Health Ministry in Gaza reported that since the truce began, at least 318 Palestinians have been killed and 788 wounded. The ministry also says nearly 70,000 Palestinians have been killed in the enclave since October 2023 as a result of the wider conflict.

“This is a reminder that the ceasefire is quite fragile, and in fact, that the violence never ended at all,” reporter Hani Mahmoud said from Gaza City, describing persistent fear across the territory.

Military claims and rebel response

Israel’s military said it struck targets it described as linked to Hamas after its troops came under attack near the so-called yellow line, where Israeli forces remain positioned inside Gaza. A statement from the prime minister’s office said that five senior Hamas members were killed; Hamas did not immediately confirm the claim and condemned the strikes as further violations of the ceasefire.

Hamas accused Israeli forces of moving west of the agreed boundary and called on mediators and the US to intervene urgently to halt what it described as systematic violations and killings carried out on "fabricated pretexts."

Rising tensions in the West Bank

At the same time, reports of Israeli military operations and settler attacks continued in the occupied West Bank. Local reports say settlers assaulted Palestinian farmers southeast of Masafer Yatta in the South Hebron Hills, and that soldiers wounded two Palestinians during a raid in Dura, south of Hebron.

A UN spokesperson highlighted an alarming surge in settler violence, noting that 260 settler attacks were recorded in October — the highest monthly total since 2006. The spokesperson warned that recent actions, including home demolitions, property seizures, arrests, movement restrictions, settlement expansion, and forcible displacement, risk constituting unlawful transfer and could amount to war crimes under international law.

The continuing violence in Gaza and the West Bank underscores the fragility of the ceasefire and has prompted renewed calls for immediate, robust diplomatic intervention to prevent further civilian suffering.
