Israeli Strike in Southern Lebanon Kills One; Drone Grenade Wounds Five as Tensions Persist

An Israeli strike in Zawtar al-Sharqiyah killed one man and a drone-dropped grenade wounded five in Shaqra, Lebanese health officials said. Israel said it targeted Hezbollah launchers and two military sites and earlier reported killing a Hezbollah member in Froun. Lebanon accuses Israel of breaching the November 2024 ceasefire while Israel blames Hezbollah for rebuilding forces. Health authorities report over 330 killed and about 945 wounded in Lebanon since the ceasefire.

Israeli Strike in Southern Lebanon Kills One; Drone Grenade Wounds Five as Tensions Persist

An Israeli strike in southern Lebanon on Saturday killed one person after hitting a vehicle in Zawtar al-Sharqiyah, Lebanon's health ministry said. The man was identified by officials as Kamel Reda Qarnabash, who was driving when the vehicle was hit.

The ministry also reported that a grenade dropped by an Israeli drone wounded five people in the nearby town of Shaqra. Lebanon's official news agency said there were additional strikes across the south and east, with no further casualties confirmed at this time.

In an official statement, the Israeli military said it struck "several Hezbollah launchers that were recently identified and placed in military sites in southern Lebanon" and targeted "two Hezbollah military sites... including weapons storage facilities and additional military structures." The army did not immediately comment on the fatal incident in Zawtar al-Sharqiyah.

Earlier, Israel said it had killed a Hezbollah member in a strike in the Froun area, accusing the individual of carrying out "advanced terror attacks" against Israel and its forces. Lebanese health officials had previously reported that a strike on a vehicle in Froun had also killed one person.

Lebanese authorities say these strikes breach the ceasefire reached in November 2024, an agreement intended to halt more than a year of heavy fighting between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah. Israel counters that Hezbollah is rebuilding military capabilities and has violated the terms of the ceasefire.

According to the Lebanese health ministry, more than 330 people have been killed and about 945 wounded in Lebanon since the ceasefire took effect. Earlier this week, an Israeli strike on the Ain al-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp killed 13 people; Israel said it targeted members of Hamas, which it described as allied with Hezbollah. A local secondary school reported two of its students among the dead.

The United States has urged the Lebanese government to press Hezbollah to surrender its weapons, a demand the group has rejected. The recent incidents underscore persistent volatility in southern Lebanon as both sides trade accusations while diplomatic efforts continue to prevent a wider escalation.
