Trump: Interviews Underway to Pick Next Federal Reserve Chair
President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that his administration has begun interviewing candidates to serve as the next chairman of the Federal Reserve. He also reiterated that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent did not want the post.
Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump said the White House is "talking to various people" about the job. He repeated his preference to remove the current Fed chair, Jerome Powell, but said others are holding him back.
"We are talking to various people," Trump said. "I'd love to get the guy currently in there out... but people are holding me back."
The remarks underscore ongoing discussions inside the administration about leadership at the U.S. central bank at a sensitive time for monetary policy. Trump named Powell directly as the incumbent he would prefer to replace.
