U.S. President Donald Trump said he wants the next Federal Reserve chair to cut interest rates if markets are performing well and warned he would not appoint anyone who disagrees with him. The comments, made in Washington on Dec. 23, highlight his preference for a Fed leader aligned with his views on monetary policy. Observers say the remarks could fuel debate over central bank independence.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 23 — U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he expects the next chairman of the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates if financial markets are doing well and warned that "anybody that disagrees with me will never be the Fed Chairman."

Speaking in Washington, Trump emphasized he wants a Fed chair who shares his views on monetary policy. He repeated his preference for lower borrowing costs when market conditions are favorable and signaled he would not appoint someone who openly opposes his approach.

"Anybody that disagrees with me will never be the Fed Chairman," Trump said.

His comments underscore his desire for a central bank leader aligned with his policy priorities and may revive debate about the importance of central bank independence in setting interest-rate policy. The remarks were reported from Washington on Dec. 23.
