Massive Explosions and Fire Engulf Industrial Park Near Buenos Aires
Powerful explosions tore through an industrial park near Buenos Aires on Friday night, triggering a major blaze that sent thick plumes of smoke hundreds of metres into the air and turned the night sky orange. The complex, which houses tyre, chemical and other manufacturing plants, saw fires erupt across several factories.
Flights to and from the country’s busiest international airport just outside the capital were cancelled or delayed as smoke spread and emergency services responded. The cause of the explosions remains under investigation, and authorities said fires affected at least five separate facilities within the industrial park.
Local response: Gaston Granados, the mayor of Ezeiza — the district that contains the industrial park — told C5N television crews were attempting to control the blaze but had not yet succeeded. He said the blasts shattered windows at his nearby home and that authorities were evacuating families from surrounding neighbourhoods.
“The explosions and fire breaking out in the different factories are huge,” Granados said.
Firefighters remained on the scene into Saturday, continuing to battle what officials described as a complex and lengthy fire. Fabian Garcia, civil defence director for Buenos Aires province, warned: “It is a complex fire. It will be a long fire.”
Medical facilities reported multiple casualties. Carlos Santoro, a hospital director, said his hospital had received 22 injured people, including a patient who suffered a heart attack and a pregnant woman with respiratory difficulties. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely given the presence of chemicals and other potentially hazardous materials at the site.
Investigations into the cause are ongoing and emergency teams have prioritized extinguishing hotspots, evacuating nearby residents and securing the perimeter to limit further risks.
