Three‑legged challenge raises funds and spirits across Yorkshire
Lindsey Burrow and BBC Look North presenter Amy Garcia have raised more than £7,000 after completing a 30‑mile, three‑legged walk across Yorkshire in support of BBC Children in Need.
The pair took part in the Thousand Mile Challenge Extra Leg, a collective effort in which dozens of BBC presenters and celebrities walked a combined 1,000 miles to raise money for the appeal. Lindsey, who has run several marathons in memory of her late husband, rugby league legend Rob Burrow, and Amy arrived to cheering crowds when they finished at Forget Me Not Hospice in Huddersfield on Friday evening.
Two tough days on the road
The challenge was completed over two days. They set off on Thursday from Airedale Academy in Castleford — the school Rob Burrow attended — in front of the Rob Burrow Fitness Suite, and finished the first day after 15 miles in Selby. On Friday they resumed the route, walking from Barnsley toward Huddersfield.
During the second day, the women were tied together at the ankles and spent around 12 hours on the route, making their way through High Hoyland, Clayton West, Emley, Grange Moor, Kirkheaton and Colne Bridge. They reached Forget Me Not Hospice at about 18:40 GMT, where supporters greeted them with applause.
Gratitude and grit
After a day of walking in wind and rain, the duo were told they had raised more than £7,000 from donations collected in fundraising buckets along the route. Lindsey said she was relieved to finish and touched by those they met: "We are just so relieved to get here. To come here and see so many children, that's the reason we did it — to fundraise for Children in Need and the incredible work charities do."
"The generosity of our incredible community has definitely been the highlight," Amy added.
Lindsey described the second day as a "long slog" and said they had to "dig deep at certain points." Both women publicly thanked the many members of the public who cheered, donated and supported them throughout the two‑day challenge.
