Marjorie Taylor Greene Accuses Trump of 'Gaslighting' Americans Over High Prices — Calls for Compassion

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene criticized Donald Trump for what she called "gaslighting" Americans by suggesting prices have fallen, arguing many households still face high grocery, clothing and utility costs. Speaking on "The Sean Spicer Show," she credited Trump for helping curb inflation but said stabilization has not reduced everyday prices and urged compassion from leaders. Greene blamed government spending for inflation, cited the roughly 9% peak in 2022, and drew criticism from Trump, while analysts warned downplaying affordability could be politically damaging.

Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene renewed her public criticism of former President Donald Trump on Thursday, accusing him of downplaying the persistence of high consumer costs and "gaslighting" Americans who continue to struggle with grocery, clothing and utility bills.

Speaking on "The Sean Spicer Show," Greene acknowledged that the Trump administration "deserves a lot of credit for lowering inflation and holding it steady," but argued that stabilizing inflation is not the same as bringing everyday prices back down.

"That doesn’t bring prices down, and so gaslighting the people and trying to tell them that prices have come down is not helping — it’s actually infuriating people," Greene said.

She insisted Americans can see the effects of price increases in their daily lives. "People know what they're paying at the grocery store. They know what they're paying for their kids' clothes and school supplies. They know what they're paying for their electricity bills," Greene said.

Greene criticized the White House's messaging as ineffective and urged elected leaders to show empathy. "We need compassion and to show that we care about the American people, and show that we are in the trenches with them on what they're going through," she said. "You don't gaslight them. You don't lecture them, and you don't deny what's happening."

She also called for fiscal restraint, arguing that "government spending drives inflation," and referenced the spike in inflation around 2022 — which reached roughly 9% year-over-year at its peak — while pointing to pandemic-era relief like the CARES Act and later large legislative packages signed under President Joe Biden and passed by congressional leaders.

Trump responded to Greene's remarks at a recent Q&A, saying he was puzzled by her change in tone: "I don't know what happened to Marjorie. She's a nice woman, but I don't know what happened. She's lost her way, I think."

CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten weighed in as well, warning that downplaying voters' affordability concerns could be a major political misstep. "Donald Trump might be trying to downplay voters' concerns about affordability, but I'm here to tell you that is a ginormous error," Enten said. "It may be an error that goes down in political infamy."

HuffPost has reached out to the White House for comment.
