Man jailed for 11½ years after attacks on two women
A 37-year-old man from Rougemont Close, Salisbury, has been sentenced to 11½ years in prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting one woman and strangling another.
Cameron Mackay was found guilty at Salisbury Crown Court of five offences dating back to April 2022, including assault by penetration, sexual assault, indecent exposure, actual bodily harm and intentional strangulation.
In one incident, the court heard a woman in her 40s was sexually assaulted while she slept after Mackay had given her alcohol. In a separate attack, Mackay met a woman in her 30s while walking his dog, invited her to his home, exposed himself and then assaulted her when she tried to leave. During that confrontation he climbed on top of the woman and strangled her with both hands; she fought back and managed to escape.
Both incidents were reported to police in June 2023 and subsequently investigated by Wiltshire Police.
Detective Constable Dan Smith described Mackay as a “dangerous man” whose serious offending will have long-lasting impacts on the victims. He also praised both women for their “incredible bravery and strength” in reporting the assaults and giving evidence in court.
Sentence and aftermath: The lengthy custodial sentence reflects the court’s view of the seriousness of Mackay’s offences and the harm caused to the victims.
