Overnight security alert in Galliagh, Londonderry

More than 20 homes were evacuated overnight after reports of two suspect devices in the Galliagh area of Londonderry.

The incident, affecting Glenabbey Close and Beraghvale, began at about 00:30 GMT on Thursday. Police said they launched a public-safety operation and established multiple cordons around the scene to protect residents while safety checks were carried out.

"Please be assured we are working our way through this incident as quickly as we can, however, the safety of the community is our priority," said PSNI Chief Inspector Graeme Craig.

Officers later confirmed some cordons were reduced overnight, but Glenabbey Close remains closed while investigations and further safety checks continue. Galliagh community centre was opened to accommodate people who were asked to leave their homes and to offer support to those affected.

Local officials acknowledged the disruption caused to residents, including families and children who were displaced in the early hours. No further details on the devices or any arrests have been released; enquiries are ongoing and police have urged people to avoid the cordoned areas and follow official guidance.
