Israeli Strikes Hit Southern Lebanon — 2 Dead, 7 Wounded as Tensions Rise Despite Ceasefire

Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon killed two people and wounded seven, hitting Doueir and Aita al-Shaab, according to Lebanon's Health Ministry. Israel said it targeted a Radwan Force commander and another suspected Hezbollah operative, calling them threats to troops and infrastructure. The attacks came despite a November 2024 ceasefire and follow earlier strikes that killed four in Nabatieh, raising fears of renewed escalation.

Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon kill two and injure seven

Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon on Monday killed two people and wounded seven, Lebanese authorities said, following warnings from Israel that it might step up operations against alleged Hezbollah targets.

Lebanon's Ministry of Health reported that a strike on the town of Doueir in Nabatieh province killed one person and left seven others injured. A separate strike in the border town of Aita al-Shaab in the Bint Jbeil district killed a second person.

Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) said that in Doueir three missiles struck a car, triggering a blaze that spread to nearby vehicles and a shopping complex. Firefighters extinguished the flames while emergency teams cleared debris and shattered glass from damaged shops, AFP reported.

The Israeli army said the strike in Doueir killed Mohammed Ali Hadid, whom it described as a commander in the Radwan Force, a special Hezbollah unit, and accused him of trying to "reestablish Hezbollah terror infrastructure sites" in the Nabatieh area. Israel also said another Hezbollah member was killed in Aita al-Shaab while "attempting to gather intelligence on Israeli troops." These statements reflect Israeli claims.

The strikes came despite a ceasefire agreed in November 2024 aimed at halting more than a year of cross-border clashes. In recent days Israeli officials have vowed to intensify operations; on Sunday, Defence Minister Israel Katz warned that Hezbollah was "playing with fire." Lebanese officials strongly condemned the attacks, saying they undermine peace efforts.

On Saturday, separate Israeli strikes in Nabatieh killed four people, the Health Ministry said, raising further concerns of renewed escalation between Israel and Hezbollah as the fragile ceasefire shows signs of strain.

International response: The United States has urged Lebanon to pursue direct talks with Israel; a US envoy, cited in reports, said Washington is "encouraging negotiations." The recent strikes have heightened fears that the conflict could widen, with humanitarian and regional security implications.

Note: Casualty figures and attributions in this report reflect statements from Lebanese authorities and the Israeli military; independent verification of some claims is pending.
