Shelby Dawn Lashombe, 25, pleaded guilty in April to two counts of improper relationship between educator and student. A judge accepted a plea deal on September 25 that dropped two sexual-assault counts and placed her on six years of deferred probation with a $1,000 fine, four weekends in jail, and 60 days on a county work detail. The teen’s father told the court his son is 'thriving' and urged leniency, while the mother testified the boy has suffered anxiety and withdrawal. Deferred probation means no final conviction if terms are met.

A Texas teacher who admitted to inappropriate relationships with two underage boys received a plea deal that significantly reduced the potential penalties she faced after a courtroom appeal from one of the boys' fathers.

Case Background

Shelby Dawn Lashombe, 25, pleaded guilty in April to two counts of improper relationship between educator and student — offenses classified as second-degree felonies. As part of a plea agreement accepted by a judge on September 25, prosecutors dropped two additional counts of sexual assault of a child.

Sentence Details

Under the agreement approved by Judge Thomas West of the 19th State District Court, Lashombe was placed on deferred probation for six years. The negotiated terms also require a $1,000 fine, four weekends in jail, and 60 days on a county prisoner work detail; media reports note the work detail is to be completed while not in custody.

What Happened

Lashombe was arrested after a report that she had been seen kissing a 16-year-old boy. The teen confirmed they had a physical relationship, and Lashombe later acknowledged a similar relationship with another underage boy. Although Lashombe was employed as a teacher and coach at the time, KWTX reports neither boy attended her school. Her defense argued she did not have supervisory authority over the teens and said both young men initiated contact via social media.

Courtroom Testimony and Reaction

The judge said he likely would have imposed a harsher sentence but for testimony from one boy’s father and the teen’s therapist. The father told the court his son is in counseling but is not traumatized, is earning good grades, playing well on the football team, and has college acceptances. He described his son as 'thriving' and urged the court not to impose a prison term or a felony conviction.

Father: 'He is thriving; I do not view him as a victim.'

By contrast, the teen’s mother — who is divorced from the man who testified — said her son has been harmed. She testified he suffers from anxiety and depression, has withdrawn from family, stopped attending Catholic Mass, and declined to go to his high school prom.

Deferred Probation Explained

In Texas, deferred adjudication probation means no final judgment of guilt is entered. If the defendant complies with all terms of probation, the case can be dismissed and a felony conviction avoided.

Context

The case highlights the differing perspectives family members can have about the impact of sexual misconduct on a teenager, and how those views — along with testimony from mental health professionals and visible community support — can influence sentencing decisions.
