Eva Schramm, a New Yorker renting in London, says a stranger entered her bedroom at about 3:00 a.m. She alleges the emergency operator told her to "go out and check" whether the intruder was still inside. Police arrived roughly 25 minutes later and reported nothing missing; a laptop left by the door was untouched. Shaken, Schramm left the rental and canceled her summer plans. Her account, shared on TikTok, has renewed concerns about rental safety and emergency responses.
“Go Out And Check”: New Yorker Says Stranger Entered Her London Rental At 3:00 A.M.

Eva Schramm (@eva4eva___), a visitor from New York City renting an apartment in London, says a stranger walked into her bedroom at about 3:00 a.m. while she was on the phone. She recounted the incident in a viral TikTok video, describing a terrifying few minutes that prompted her to leave the rental immediately.
Schramm says she woke to noises in the hallway and initially assumed it was a neighbor. While still under the covers, she claims the bedroom door opened and a bald, large man she had never seen before stood in her doorway; her bed was only a few feet from the entrance.
"I feel like my brain did not compute what was going on for a second... I thought it was a neighbor coming in," Schramm said. She says she screamed, threw her phone at the man and made eye contact; he then slowly turned and walked out of the room.
With no lock on the bedroom door, Schramm held the door closed with one hand while trying to find the UK emergency number. Her hands were shaking and her ex gave her the number so she could call. She alleges the operator showed little urgency and asked her how she knew the intruder was still inside; when she replied that she hadn't heard him leave, the operator reportedly said, "Can you go out and check?" Schramm refused for safety reasons.
She says police arrived about 25 minutes after her call. Officers found no stolen items — a laptop left near the door was reportedly untouched — and allegedly suggested the person may have entered by mistake while intoxicated. Schramm disputes that description, saying the man did not appear drunk or unsteady.
Aftermath
Shaken by the encounter, Schramm packed her belongings and cut short plans to stay in the rental for the summer. Her TikTok post sparked discussion about personal safety in short-term rentals and the response from emergency services. The post also referenced similar recent incidents, such as a guest who abandoned an Airbnb in the Appalachian Mountains after finding an odd box in a locked room.
