Two people were arrested in London on suspicion of assisting Iran’s intelligence service, the Metropolitan Police has said.
A 60-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman were detained at separate properties on Wednesday as part of an investigation into alleged offences under the National Security Act (NSA). Both were later released on bail under strict conditions until late October.
Investigation Details
The arrests followed two searches carried out in June at addresses in north and north‑west London. The Met emphasised the arrests are not "connected to any of the incidents or attacks" that affected Jewish and Iranian communities across London earlier this year.
Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, said: "I appreciate news of these arrests will come as a concern to some members of the public, but I do not believe there to be any imminent threat to the wider public."
Commander Flanagan added that police have seen a marked increase in work linked to national security and state threats over the past year, and that this investigation is part of that sustained effort. She also reminded the public that the UK's terror-threat level remains at severe and urged people to stay vigilant.
