The Writers' Guild of America West Political Action Committee (WGAW PAC) has officially endorsed Los Angeles City Councilmember Nithya Raman in the city's mayoral race, citing her consistent support for organized labor and concrete proposals to boost local film and television production.
The WGAW PAC said it evaluates candidates based on a set of policy priorities, and that Raman aligns with those goals, which include:
- Competition in media
- Protecting the right to organize
- Preserving union health and pension plans
- Regulation of artificial intelligence
- Copyright protection
In its endorsement announcement, the union highlighted Raman's Save Hollywood Jobs plan, released in April, and noted her decision to join striking writers on the picket lines in 2023 as evidence of her pro-labor commitment.
"With organized labor under attack nationally, and television and film production leaving Hollywood, LA must elect a mayor who is committed to supporting entertainment workers. That's why WGAW is proudly backing Nithya Raman, who has a real vision for protecting jobs and supporting the entertainment industry," said WGAW President and PAC Board Member Michele Mulroney. "She is a true pro-labor candidate who walks the walk. We need her leadership now more than ever, and we are excited to be supporting her."
The endorsement follows the WGAW's earlier support for Raman's 2024 bid for Los Angeles City Council.
Raman thanked the guild and framed writers as the foundation of the entertainment industry, arguing Los Angeles must ensure creative professionals can build stable careers and afford to live in the city. She pledged that as mayor she would make City Hall an active partner in bringing production back to Los Angeles by:
- Speeding up permitting processes
- Reducing costs and bureaucratic barriers for smaller productions
- Making Los Angeles more competitive for film and TV shoots
Raman said she will work alongside writers and other entertainment workers to keep Hollywood jobs in Los Angeles.
