U.S. Bars Iranian UN Delegation From Luxury Shopping in New York Amid Sanctions and Shortages

The United States has announced renewed restrictions on the Iranian delegation visiting New York for the UN General Assembly, limiting access to wholesale markets and luxury consumer goods, a State Department spokesman said.

State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said on X that the curbs are intended to prevent regime officials from using the UN visit “for a luxury retail splurge paid for by the Iranian people's suffering.”

“While ordinary Iranians endure brutal repression, water and electricity shortages, and soaring inflation, the regime's officials want to go on shopping sprees in New York. Not on our watch,” Pigott wrote.

Background and Previous Incidents

Washington applied similar restrictions in 2025 after past delegations' purchases drew public criticism. Four years ago, former president Ebrahim Raisi's delegation was criticized when members returned to Tehran with a small truckload of souvenirs, baby diapers, dietary supplements and kitchen appliances—items many Iranians struggle to afford.
