Elizabeth Siders, 34, pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to 16 counts of child endangerment and neglect after investigators in July discovered her 16 children living in what authorities described as "deplorable conditions" at the family’s dilapidated home in Hamden, Ohio.
Court Appearance And Charges
During a hearing in Vinton County Court, Siders entered not guilty pleas to all counts. The judge labeled her a flight risk and raised her bond from $250,000 to $550,000, and issued a no-contact order prohibiting her from contacting the children. Siders is one of four family members charged in the case, including her husband, Gary Siders Jr.
Conditions Reported By Authorities
Prosecutors say the children, ages 17 months to 18 years, had been confined for much of the past four years to a single 12-foot-by-12-foot room reportedly contaminated with human waste. Officials said several children had not attended school, some were unable to speak, and the oldest child, who is developmentally disabled, could not even spell her name. Authorities described some of the youngsters as appearing "almost feral."
Related Indictments And Victim Allegations
Separately, Elizabeth Siders and her husband have been indicted on two counts of sexual battery and two counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. Prosecutors say the alleged victim in that case was a relative, not one of the couple’s own children; the individual was reportedly between 13 and 16 years old and was in their care for a period in 2022. Gary Siders Jr. pleaded not guilty in August. Gary Siders Sr. was recently found incompetent to stand trial.
Competency Requests And Medical Records
Elizabeth Siders, Gary Siders Jr. and Christina Siders (Gary Jr.’s mother) have requested formal competency evaluations, which remain pending and will influence how the cases proceed. Local birth records obtained by ABC6 indicate Siders gave birth to a child in February 2022 and delivered premature twins in November 2022 who died shortly after birth.
Defense Statement
Defense attorney Tommy Stolly told the court his client continues to ask to see her children but is subject to a no-contact order. He argued that Siders was married at 15, has been pregnant for most of her adult life, and has not received consistent postpartum or other medical care, leaving her with significant mental health concerns and raising questions about her competency.
Stolly said a competency evaluation could affect legal liability if it shows Siders lacked the capacity to understand or make informed decisions about the conduct alleged by the state. There was media speculation that Siders might be pregnant again after she appeared in court without handcuffs; her attorney declined to comment when approached by a reporter from the Columbus Dispatch.
