Maryland authorities have charged 61-year-old Joseph Lynch in the long-unsolved killing of 10-year-old George "Junior" Burdynski, a case that dates back to May 1993. The renewed investigation culminated in charges filed on Sept. 16, 2026, after new testimony prompted detectives to reopen the decades-old disappearance.
Burdynski was last seen on May 24, 1993, riding his bicycle in the Brentwood neighborhood. Despite an extensive local and federal investigation at the time, the boy was never located and his remains have not been recovered.
New Witness Account Prompts Charges
Detectives with the Prince George's County Police Department say the breakthrough came while investigators were probing separate, more recent allegations against Lynch. In May 2026, Lynch was charged with repeatedly sexually abusing two teenage boys between 2007 and 2014 at a Mount Rainier residence; he remains in custody on those charges and a 2012 arson allegation.
As part of that inquiry, two members of the department's Cold Case Unit interviewed a former neighborhood resident who was 13 when Burdynski disappeared and is now 47. The man told investigators he had been inside a home with Burdynski and Lynch on the day the boy vanished and alleged Lynch directed him to sexually assault the child. According to police, the witness said Burdynski was killed during that assault.
Following the interviews, the Prince George's County Police Department presented the case to the Prince George's County State's Attorney's Office. Prosecutors charged Lynch with second-degree murder, second-degree rape, a second-degree sex offense and a third-degree sex offense. Lynch is currently the only person charged in connection with the 1993 killing.

"First, I would like to say, Junior, I'm so sorry for what happened to you. I'm so sorry for what you had to go through. We've held on to hope for 33 years, this is not what we prayed for. This is incredibly devastating. Our hearts are shattered. We love you, Junior," said George Burdynski's sister, Virginia, at a Sept. 17 news conference.
Related Cases and Broader Impact
Police said the renewed inquiry also identified two other men, Stephen Bruce Leak and James Kowalski, who were charged in 1993 with sexually assaulting multiple boys in the area. Those prosecutions were separate but connected to the broader community investigation at the time.
Federal investigators note that the Burdynski case helped reveal early online communication methods used by offenders, prompting undercover computer-based investigations in the Baltimore area that contributed to the development and expansion of the FBI's Innocent Images program by the mid-1990s.
