Hospital nurses across Kenya ended a 43-day strike after union leaders and government officials signed a return-to-work agreement on Wednesday.

Seth Panyako, secretary-general of the nurses' union, said members would resume duties within 24 hours. He added the deal gives both sides 45 days to finalize negotiations on implementing a collective bargaining agreement originally reached in 2017 but never fully implemented due to what the government describes as budgetary constraints.

The breakthrough followed a march by nurses to the Council of Governors' office, the body that represents Kenya's 47 county governments.

Pressure From Doctors And Lawmakers
Doctors warned they might join the industrial action after reporting a surge in workload while covering nursing duties. Dr. Davji Bhimji Atellah, secretary-general of the doctors' union, said physicians had become overburdened and "cannot do the nursing jobs." In a post on X he wrote:
"We will not watch silently as the healthcare system we have dedicated our lives to serving is allowed to deteriorate. When one part of healthcare is compromised, we all suffer. And when we stand together, we protect our patients together."
The doctors' union gave the government seven days to address the nurses' concerns; if unresolved, the doctors said they would issue a strike notice.
The Senate discussed the impact of the stoppage, including reports that some county hospital dispensaries had closed. Nandi County Senator Samson Cherargei warned of a "surge in deaths" and blamed both the Council of Governors and the Salaries and Remuneration Commission for what he described as a national crisis.
With nurses returning under the new agreement, attention will shift to whether the 45-day negotiation window yields a concrete, funded plan to implement the 2017 collective bargaining agreement and relieve mounting pressure on Kenya's strained health system.
