Isar Aerospace has achieved a historic milestone for European spaceflight: its Spectrum rocket, on the "Onward and Upward" mission, successfully reached low Earth orbit after launching from Andøya Spaceport in northern Norway on Saturday.
The two-stage launcher carried six commercial and educational CubeSats alongside a non-deployable scientific experiment. The mission marks the first orbital launch to originate from European soil and is being hailed as a significant step toward autonomous European launch capability.
Why This Matters
Europe's independent access to orbit has been limited in recent years — the continent accounted for only seven of more than 300 orbital launches worldwide last year, and those missions departed from French Guiana in South America. A successful domestic launch capability could reduce reliance on overseas infrastructure and strengthen Europe's commercial launch sector.
"A historic launch from Andøya Spaceport in Norway today, the first European Launcher Challenger to reach orbit," said Josef Aschbacher, Director General of the European Space Agency (ESA). "Spectrum quite literally rose to the challenge and delivered its payloads in low Earth orbit."
The launch followed multiple delays: it had been scheduled originally for January, and a previous attempt in March 2025 ended with the rocket crashing back to Earth in under a minute. Saturday's success demonstrates rapid learning and iterative improvement by the young company.
Isar Aerospace — founded eight years ago and supported by ESA — has said it aims to become a European rival to SpaceX. Last year SpaceX accounted for more than 90% of the total payload mass sent to orbit; Isar now plans to scale production, fulfil its order pipeline, and meet growing global demand.
"We achieved within a few years what had taken the European space industry decades before," said Daniel Metzler, CEO and co‑founder of Isar Aerospace. "We have entered a new chapter for European spaceflight."
Looking ahead, Isar will focus on ramping up vehicle production, consolidating its launch cadence, and supporting satellite customers that depend on reliable, regional access to space.
