McCann Takes Narrow Lead Over Rep. Bill Huizenga in New Internal Poll

A Democratic challenger, state Sen. Sean McCann, holds a narrow three-point lead over Republican Rep. Bill Huizenga in a new internal poll shared with Semafor. The survey — conducted by Democratic firm GBAO for McCann’s campaign — is the first to show the state lawmaker edging ahead in what Democrats view as a competitive pickup opportunity as they try to flip the House.

The poll also found that nearly six in 10 likely voters disapprove of President Donald Trump’s job performance, a figure the McCann campaign highlights as part of the broader political climate shaping the race. Huizenga carried the district by nearly 12 points in 2024 and has been a long-standing target for House Democrats.

Fundraising And Campaign Reaction

Fundraising figures show McCann outraised Huizenga by about $400,000 in the first quarter of 2026, pushing McCann’s reported receipts to more than $1 million. McCann’s campaign manager, Simone Archer-Krauss, framed the momentum bluntly:

"From now until November, Sean is all gas, no brakes," she told Semafor.

The Huizenga campaign pushed back on the internal results. Spokesperson Calvin Moore dismissed the survey as biased and emphasized that voters will judge McCann on his record in November:

"McCann can cook up all the biased internal polls he wants, but he won’t be able to hide from his record in November," Moore said.

Context And Caveats

Because the poll was commissioned by the McCann campaign, its results should be interpreted with caution until corroborated by independent, nonpartisan polling. Still, the findings give Democrats an encouraging snapshot as they prioritize competitive districts like this one in their broader strategy to retake the House.
