Bodycam footage released by the Antioch Police Department shows a suspect dragging an officer into an SUV during an armed robbery at a FoodMaxx on Feb. 20. The officer repeatedly ordered the driver to stop and then shot the suspect in the leg as the vehicle sped away with the officer trapped inside. The SUV crashed, the suspect fled on foot and was arrested shortly after; both the suspect and officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Local investigators and the Contra Costa County district attorney’s office are reviewing the case.

Body-worn camera footage released by the Antioch Police Department captures the startling moment an officer was pulled into a suspect's SUV during an armed robbery at the FoodMaxx on Lone Tree Way in Antioch, California.
According to the APD, officers responded at about 5:16 a.m. on Feb. 20 to reports of an armed robbery involving multiple suspects. When officers arrived, a suspect attempted to flee in an SUV. The vehicle struck an occupied police car and then crashed through the front of the FoodMaxx, shattering the storefront glass.
During the attempt to stop the fleeing vehicle, an officer approached the SUV. A physical struggle with the driver ensued and the officer was pulled into the passenger compartment as the suspect accelerated. Bodycam audio in the released footage records the officer commanding the driver to stop and warning, “Stop the car, or I will shoot you in the leg.” The suspect replies, “Put the gun down, bro, I don't trust you,” then drives off with the officer trapped inside.

“The officer gave the driver multiple commands to stop the car, but he did not comply. The suspect continued driving recklessly and at a high rate of speed with the officer trapped inside,” the APD said in a statement.
The officer ultimately fired his service weapon, striking the driver in the leg. The SUV later collided with a parked car; the suspect exited and attempted to flee on foot but was arrested a short time later. The suspect sustained non-life-threatening injuries and the officer suffered minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.

The Antioch Police Department’s Investigations Bureau and the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office are reviewing the incident. APD asked anyone with information or who witnessed the incident to contact Detective Becerra at (925) 779-6866 or the Investigations Bureau at (925) 779-6926.
PEOPLE and local station ABC7 reported on the bodycam footage; the APD has released the video as part of its public update. The department and prosecutor's office will determine whether any further action is warranted following their review.
