City-released bodycam and security footage shows the moment officers were shot while securing an apartment building in Minneapolis on Sept. 2. Authorities say Carlton Johnson killed two residents and wounded five others, including Officers Joseph Michnowski and Yahye Mahmed Ahmed, before police shot and killed him. 911 transcripts released the same day capture terrified calls from victims hiding or lying wounded inside the building.

Dramatic body-camera and building surveillance footage released by the City of Minneapolis on Wednesday give a clearer view of how two officers were wounded while trying to secure an apartment building during a Sept. 2 shooting that left two residents dead and several others injured.

The suspect, identified as Carlton Johnson, shot and killed two neighbors and wounded five other people — including two police officers, an ex-girlfriend and two building employees — before officers fatally shot him, authorities said.

The videos show officers moving toward a wounded person in a hallway when Johnson suddenly appears from around a corner, draws a handgun and opens fire. Officer Joseph Michnowski is struck and runs past the wounded resident as additional shots ring out.

"Shooter's on the ninth floor. I took some rounds," Michnowski says into his radio, lifting a trembling left hand.

Separated from Michnowski, other officers call from a stairwell landing as they attempt to regroup. Moments later, Officer Yahye Mahmed Ahmed is heard firing while aiming down the corridor. A yellowish smoke fills the doorway and the officers retreat down the stairs; Ahmed can be heard yelling, "Oh, I got hit."

Investigators say the incident began earlier when Johnson shot and wounded a woman believed to be the mother of his child; the child was not injured, authorities said. Shortly after 4:30 p.m., a stream of frantic 911 calls reported people trapped, wounded and hiding inside the building. Call logs published by the city include a caller who said she had been shot in the legs and could not move as she pleaded for help.

According to neighbors, court records and law enforcement sources, building owners had been trying to evict Johnson. Residents reported he had threatened neighbors and warned he planned to shoot people. At least one person sought a restraining order against him. Police investigated a June incident in which he displayed a weapon, but the county attorney's office declined to file charges.

The released footage and 911 transcripts collectively portray a chaotic and frightening scene as officers and civilians were wounded during the rapidly unfolding attack. Authorities continue to review the material as part of their investigation into the events and the suspect's background.
