White House Pushes for Bipartisan AI Bill — Optimistic Despite Democratic Pushback

The White House says it is continuing to pursue a bipartisan agreement on artificial intelligence legislation this year, even as some Democrats oppose the administration's framework.

Michael Kratsios, director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy, told attendees at the Hill and Valley Forum that "we have to find a way to create a bipartisan piece of legislation that can pass both houses of Congress." He acknowledged the effort is a "big challenge," but said the administration remains "very optimistic we can try to get something done this year."

David Sacks, who serves as the White House's AI advisor, conceded that progressive resistance — particularly concerns about data centers — "has really been a struggle."

GOP leaders have urged action. House Speaker Mike Johnson told forum attendees that "inaction is unacceptable," though he did not provide a timeline for when a bill might move through Congress.

At the same event, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon recommended that lawmakers consider incentives for businesses to retain workers as part of a broader conversation about the economic impacts of AI and automation.

With competing priorities and political divisions, the path to a bipartisan AI bill remains uncertain. The administration is signaling a preference for a cross-party compromise, but concrete legislative text and a clear timetable have not yet been disclosed.
