A mother has died days after being struck by a vehicle in Gilroy, California, in the same collision that killed her husband during an elementary school morning drop-off.

What Happened

On Friday, Jan. 16, at about 8 a.m., Stacia and Andrew Stuart were walking in a marked crosswalk at the intersection of Charles Lux Drive and Lopez Way after dropping off one of their children at Las Animas Elementary School, according to the Gilroy Police Department. A teenage driver struck the couple; Andrew Stuart was pronounced dead at the scene and Stacia Stuart was seriously injured and airlifted to a hospital. Official Statements and Investigation

Gilroy police said the teen driver is cooperating with investigators. Authorities reported that they have ruled out drugs, alcohol and excessive speed as contributing factors. The investigation remains active as officials continue to gather facts.

"We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident... Our hearts continue to be with the victims, their families, and everyone impacted by this event," a joint statement from the Gilroy Fire Department and Gilroy Police Department read.

Impact on the Community

The couple leave behind 7-year-old twins. A LinkedIn post noted by the San Francisco Chronicle said the family will be supported in coordinating next steps, with Andrew’s sister, Kelly Younger, handling communications.

Gilroy Unified School District confirmed that two parents of students were involved in the crash and said on-site counseling services were made available to students, families and staff at Las Animas Elementary and nearby Rod Kelley Elementary. Mayor Greg Bozzo released a statement offering condolences and pledging community support in the coming days and weeks.

Calls For Safety Upgrades

Community members quickly called for improved safety measures at the crosswalk behind Las Animas Elementary. A Change.org petition started by Lisa Reese urging installation of flashing crosswalk lights has drawn more than 2,500 signatures, arguing the crosswalk—used daily by students, parents and staff—lacks adequate safety features.
