German Chancellor Friedrich Merz told the World Economic Forum in Davos that the old global order is "unravelling at breathtaking pace," with Russia's invasion of Ukraine marking the start of a deeper shift. He warned that China has risen into the ranks of great powers while the United States faces challenges to its dominant position, prompting a reassessment of U.S. foreign and security policy. Merz said the world has entered an era of "great power politics" built on power and, if necessary, force, but insisted nations still have choices and must act with clear-eyed realism.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz told the World Economic Forum in Davos that the established post‑Cold War order is "unravelling at breathtaking pace" and urged European partners to respond swiftly and realistically to a changing strategic landscape.

Speaking on the opening day in Davos, Merz said Russia's invasion of Ukraine signaled the start of a new era, but that the deeper shifts reshaping global politics extend far beyond that conflict. He warned that the emerging system of international relations is increasingly defined by the interests and strength of a few great powers.

Key Warnings

Merz highlighted China’s long-term strategic ascent and said Beijing has "worked its way into the ranks of the great powers." He also warned that the United States’ once unchallenged global position is under strain, prompting Washington to radically rethink its foreign and security policy.

“We have entered a time of great power politics,” Merz said. “This new world of great powers is being built on power, on strength, and when it comes to it, on force. It's not a cozy place.”

Despite the stark analysis, Merz insisted that nations are not powerless. He urged Europe to face harsh realities with clear-eyed realism and to take deliberate steps to shape the future rather than be passively subject to it.

What This Means For Europe

Merz called for rapid strategic adjustments across European policy areas, including defense, energy security, and diplomatic coordination. He stressed that a sober assessment of threats and interests — not wishful thinking — will be necessary for Europe to maintain influence and protect its values.

Bottom line: The international order is shifting toward competition among major powers. Merz’s message to Europe: adapt fast, prepare realistically, and act together to help shape the emerging global landscape.
